FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ETHICS COMMISSION EXPANDING EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH

At its July 26, 2007 meeting, the Ohio Ethics Commission announced two upcoming Ethics educational sessions as a part of its ongoing educational efforts, specifically for state board and commission members. The two sessions were added to the schedule to provide board and commission members and directors with additional opportunities for information regarding the application of Ohio's Ethics Law to their public duties and to assist boards and commissions in complying with Governor Strickland's Executive Order in January.

In 2006, the Commission conducted 199 separate educational presentations as one of its responsibilities to more than 13,000 public officials and employees, the members of a number of state boards and commissions, the public, and non-profit and private sector groups.

"The Ethics Commission places great value on Ethics education and routinely receives positive feedback on our practical approach to ethical issues," stated Commission Education Coordinator, Susan Willeke. "We are looking forward to providing additional educational opportunities to those who serve Ohio on state boards and commissions."

In January, Governor Strickland issued an Executive Order requiring that state board and commission members receive two hours of ethics instruction every other year. The Ethics Commission is adding these two sessions this fall to expand current educational session dates and to assist state boards and commissions in responding to the Governor's Order. Beginning in 2008, the Commission also will provide quarterly educational opportunities throughout the year to update those in public service about the application of Ohio's Ethics Law.

Board and commission members and their directors may attend either of the two sessions scheduled:

  • Friday, September 7, 2007, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. or
  • Friday, October 5, 2007, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Both sessions will be held in the Ohio Department of Transportation's Auditorium located at 1980 West Broad Street, Columbus. Those inquiring about attendance are free to contact Education Coordinator Susan Willeke at the number above.
